You probably know the how's and whys and wherefores of eating well. Everyone and their Aunt Emma seems to be using words like: clean, vegan, pescatarian (I met a devoted 5 year old pescatarian some years ago - flipped me out), paleo, g-free and on and on. I too prescribe to a combination of these modes of eating more often than not because it makes me feel good. Also...the glaring fact I'm not 20 anymore and most importantly, and disturbingly as a result - NO. I can no longer eat a medium pizza (alone), dance until 3 a.m. and function at work/school like nothing untoward happened the night before...much less zip up my pants the next day but... there was a time. *sigh*
I enjoy my food make no mistake about it! I cook and often, and LOVE my vegetables. As time has ticked on, I have been looking for ways to absorb more nutrients; which research shows makes for sparkling hair, skin and nails. After all, the nutrients we consume and the quality of those nutrients show up in our hair!
Queue the Forever Young song now!
Forget about being "healthy" for a minute (just a minute) and get in touch with your vanity. If you don't want to look like a worn out old handbag when you're of mature years then consider what you're eating and drinking!
So you know...drink more water blah, blah, blah...and juice...Gulp! *blink*
I love my veg but the thought of drinking them kinda choke-a-grosses me...you know? I mean some of the concoctions look and taste like pond scum. Nevertheless, our society is changing and now there is a whole segment (including me) who actually enjoys green juice. For those of you who don't partake, the drink is usually some combination of sweet fruit, and leafy green vegetables - just think green!
After experimenting with a few recipes some definitely too healthy for me (like creamy dirt *gag*). I have settled on a formulation which I call my pimp juice! OOOOHHHHH -HHHHOOOOOO!!!
*Insert Nellly song here!*
After drinking a glass I definitely feel "clean as a whistle and sharp as a razor"! After prolonged use, you'll definitely notice a difference in your hair quality! I'll give you a break down of my pimp juice below and the hair benefits locked within!
Dust off your juicer (or consider acquiring one) and wash up the following and get to gulping!
2 medium sized Cucumbers - Cucumbers are rich in vitamin A and C and minerals like silica. Silica has been proven to improve hair texture, prevent, split ends, aid in moisture retention and accelerate hair growth. Other good sources of silica include celery (which I sometimes prefer to cucumbers in my juice) and asparagus.
1 -2 cups Kale - Kale is rich in Vitamin A, which provides protection for your hair from environmental toxins. It also helps produce sebum (which acts as a natural conditioner). The recommended dietary allowance of vitamin A is 700 to 1300 micrograms per day for women and 900 micrograms per day for men.
2 Green Apples - This fruit although humblest of all fruits is a nutrition giant! On average, a medium apple contains more antioxidants than a large 1500 mg dose of vitamin C. Apples also contain procyanidin B-2 that has been scientifically tested to be beneficial for male pattern baldness. Procyanidin B-2 also prolongs the hair growth cycle and shortens the rest cycle. This compound is found in the skins of unripe green apples. Science aside, apples will help sweeten the mix so it doesn't choke-a-gross you!
1 cup Spinach - My favorite leafy green, spinach, is full of edible fiber and is a rich source of iron and zinc! These two particular minerals are indispensable for healthy hair growth and retention. The absence of zinc and iron often leads to hair loss in many people.
Experiment and formulate your own pimp juice! As a recommendation think about the combinations. Check out these recipes to help you get started. Remember when formulating your own pimp juice, more isn't always better! Usually a mix of 3-4 vegetables and fruits to start is more than enough!
